This question is intended for those who do not use an automated medication dispensing system and instead utilize multi-dose vials for injectable medications.
While best practice recommends the use of single-dose vials, we recognize that due to the critical supply of certain injectable medications used in the IPU, alternative approaches may be necessary. The goal is to ensure that safe and compliant practices are consistently followed.
- Are you withdrawing a single dose from the multi-dose vial and discarding any remaining medication immediately?
- Alternatively, are nurses retaining the multi-dose vial for use throughout their shift and discarding any remaining contents at the end of the shift? If so, what does that look like?
